@John, that’s an easy question: wherever you’re at, according to most of the people I wind up scolding. The nearest bathroom is wherever you’re at.

@Diggy: The Internet is very, very cool, you’re right. The library is a different sort of cool. My system currently spends several hundred thousand dollars each year to subscribe to very powerful, expensive databases that you can’t get to on the “public” web. Anybody with a library card can get just about anything they want, online or off.

Haha, wow I enjoyed this article.
I haven’t used a library in ages really, last time was in primary school for projects, when the internet wasn’t as cool as it is now.

I do agree that there is plenty of information, but sometimes can be impossible to find.

@gordie: Yes sir, I’m about 30 posts in and there’s no end in sight. It’s been staggering for traffic, though.

@Nate: a word of warning–not all librarians ARE, but they’re all SUPPOSED to be able to do this stuff. If you get a lame one, don’t let them off the hook.

@Colin: Right, sir. If Hollywood has taught me anything, it’s that you shouldn’t give machines too much power. Otherwise, it leads to way too many sub-par sequels that never should have been made:)

@Kristin: Where are you from? As I said to Nate, those librarians should be able to help you. Get on their case if they go to Google, give up, and send you on your way.

I never thought to ask a librarian about travel. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve asked a librarian anything since I learned the Dewey Decimal System. It just never crossed my mind that there was a logical answer to all my frustrated Google-sent-me-on-a-wild-goose-chase rants!

Your point about Google not understanding certain kinds of questions is dead on, and that’s part of what the developers of so-called ‘Web 3.0′ semantic search software are trying to figure out. It’s a really difficult thing to do, though, so I imagine we’ll need librarians to help us figure out those ever-so-important-but-difficult-to-find-answers-to questions for quite some time into the future.

In fact, I imagine we’ll always need human intermediaries for these machines to some degree…no matter how quickly they are able to file through databases and pull up matching keywords, they’ll never learn to…love.
