Hi Brooke,
China is okay, if you can do all your work online. Teaching at a university, although low in hours it is till considered full time work and therefore gets you a work visa. If you want as much spare time as possible, do your best to avoid teaching writing. I've managed to never have taught a writing class in 8 years of EFL teaching.

Contact me anytime. Cheers.

John - thanks for yet another great interview! I'm really enjoying these SO MUCH!

Gordie - thanks for sharing your tips!! I am working remotely from Thailand now, but have a very big interest in China. What part are you in? I taught a university level class in Bangkok, and recently started teaching English at a local high school in Krabi. Personally, with running a business, I prefer doing the university gigs... but if you do that part time here, they won't give you a work permit. Maybe China would be a good option to do both? I'll be in touch and am checking out your site now! Thanks!
Cheers,
Brooke

Hi Diggy,
I'm pretty much doing exactly what you're doing now. Writing two posts a week for my blog and writing a guest post each week for other blogs.

Hi Caron,
It's great to see that you can also cope with the contradictions in China and stay sane. Lol! China has changed me forever in a good way.

Hey John and Gordie!
Nice to read this interview and learn more about you:)
I would love to visit China one day, but don't see it as a place where i would want to work or live.

Regarding the blogging, I know it can be hard. I messed around for a good 8 months before I had an understanding of blogging and how things worked and it's only really been the last 5 months that I've worked hard on my blog. It can indeed be difficult gaining readers. One thing I suggest is guest posting, 2-4 a month for big blogs.

Leaving comments helps, but its not really worth the effort. Only do it if you really enjoy the posts.
I am only writing 2 posts a week on my blog, and 2-4 guest posts a month, and that gets mee 150-250 new readers a month which I'm happy with :)

Good luck on your journey and thanks for sharing :)
Cheers
Diggy

Hi Caron,

I also highly recommend teaching English as a safe way to explore the world. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Nate,

I also feel that new blogger struggle. It takes time and work like everything worthwhile I guess.

Hi John, great to see this interview of Gordie.

As a fellow China expat I can to relate to much of what he has said, especially the great (fire) wall, it's a hassle speaking freely when I know that everything I do and say is being censored (is it spooky that my VPN'd firefox just crashed as I finished writing that sentence...?!) As a journalist of an English magazine in Harbin I know that with every step I do so with the fear of broken egg shells & deportation. It's a fact of life but change is happening and the country is evolving, ever so slowly!

One of the greatest things you can do is experience this highly-misunderstood country first hand. Teaching English is a fantastic way to do that, especially as your students will offer insights not offered anywhere else. I congratulate Gordie on his achievements both with his blog and his time in China, it's a contradictory country that can push you to your extreme and heal you simultaneously.
