Made a trip out to Sicily last year, loved the east coast and the culture, the climate, etc. The place I'm looking at will cost about a third of the one you've mentioned but once I've renovated and paid misc. sales fees, will probably be around 20,000 Euros. Still, doing it this way will let me do it with cash, mortgage-free. When deciding where to semi-retire always think about stability and political risk as well. Bulgaria recently joined the european union, and things are pretty stable there. Furthermore my rent is about $200/month; it could have been about $300 for an apartment in the capital. You could definitely live there for under $1000. And real-estate is not that expensive - a one bedroom apt in the capital is only a little bit above $50K and less than that in the provinces. Good luck in your quest for mini-retirements!
