@John – I just came across your blog through Emily at Maiden Voyage. What a great resource! Congrats on your mission to move and travel abroad in April 2010. Spring is always a good time for new beginnings. Plus you will benefit from good sunny weather if you choose to circumnavigate the globe starting in the western hemisphere. Great interview and awesome questions. As a ‘questions critic’ I give you a thumbs up. Can’t wait to read more.

I fell in love with your writing from Transitions Abroad. I am a blogger for Goinglobal.com and your articles have been a huge help & inspiration in my research. I have to tell you that I did a gap year (as an American) and in total it came out to $14,000. That includes flights, accommodation, food, fun, gifts, health insurance, gifts and pretty much everything else you can think of. It was the BEST time of my life. It doesn’t have to be expensive. I am a testament to that. And we traveled from Europe, to Thailand, to Australia to New Zealand and back to the States. Nice to hear that you write for Wise Bread. Will be checking that out too.

@Amber – Re: scrubbing toilets – You’d be surprised what you’ll agree to do if you are getting free digs/food etc in an awesome hostel or 5-star B&B (we’ve worked in trade for accommodation in both types of places); all of a sudden a few toilets don’t slow you down as much. Having said that I haven’t faced too many toilets in my travels, but I’m less “above them” than maybe I once was.

@Corbett – As you well know, it all boils down to the style and preference of travel as to how much it costs. Vagablogging has a post about whether you need alcohol to have a good time on the road; I argue no. I’d rather experience my money, not drink it. But those are the sorts of decisions we all must make on the road; what we decide predicates how much money we need.

“I don’t think there are many long terms ways to avoid trading time for money”….agreed. But there can certainly be SMART ways to trade time for money!
@Diggy – The scariest thing (hands down) for me on the road is making sure I don’t end up financially destitute somewhere (even back “home”). I simply won’t allow it to happen – the travels will end long before that would be a reality – but I’d hate to cut my traveling short due to short funds. So you’re in good company; it’s normal stuff to stress about!

This is a great interview! I've been reading Nora's work at Wisebread for a while now so it's great to learn more about her adventures. It's very inspirational to me as a writer and travel lover.
